In his book, The 10 Principles of “Good” Design, Dieter Rams writes: “Design should not dominate things, should not dominate people. It should help people. That's its role.” (2021).
Help people.
I remember my first year of university, studying Industrial Design in Guatemala without necessarily knowing what I had gotten myself into. I remember how in several courses our professors would say that Industrial Design focuses on improving people's quality of life. It is because of this principle that I identified with what is now my profession. It is with this principle that we started Estudio Mueca. It is the basis of our work: helping people.
As Charles Eames, the pioneer of innovation in design, would say: “Recognizing the need is the primary condition for design”. For us, and many designers, Design is the means by which we creatively solve problems (Design Council, 2023) and fill gaps in the context in which we live or in a reality that we are called upon to discover. Methodologies and tools that guide processes so that we can create solutions with a positive impact and importance for the people who will use them, that is Design.
Designing a brand or website for a company that sells anti-inflammatory foods or a Data Center maintenance service; the development of furniture or machinery; the analysis of the work of farmers in the country. All these projects got solutions generated through Design in Estudio Mueca and are the result of a process that begins with exploration: with whom and for whom we design so that we eventually arrive at the design itself.
So, take our notepad, a digital space where we will be publishing our notes – well, a blog. In it you will find inspiration, advice and findings that we have discovered in some of our projects or from our passion for research. All this throughout our journey through Design and Innovation.
